Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder: Art and Philosophy

Everyone’s philosophy on life shapes how they perceive art. Aesthetics, a branch of philosophy, is closely intertwined with art. Each of us has our own interpretation of beauty—whether it’s an abstract painting or a simple photograph, beauty remains deeply subjective. Immanuel Kant’s perspective on aesthetic judgment has endured through the centuries. His belief that beauty is objective and universal still resonates with some, even today.

Objective vs. Subjective Aesthetics

Kant argued that aesthetic judgment could be universally applied: certain things are inherently beautiful, while others may not possess the same aesthetic value. In essence, he suggested that beauty could be objectively assessed. However, this contrasts with the idea that what one person finds beautiful might not appeal to another. This dichotomy underscores the notion that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.

The concept of subjective aesthetics has also been a long-standing viewpoint. This perspective recognizes that beauty varies from person to person and culture to culture; it doesn’t need to conform to a single standard or definition. Beauty can mean something different to each individual or group. For instance, a piece of artwork might seem chaotic and disorganized to one viewer but appear perfectly balanced and harmonious to another.
